A .docx, .xlsx or .pptx is a ZIP archive with the text, the layout and every embedded image inside it. The text is tiny. Almost all the weight comes from pictures — usually pasted in at full camera resolution and then scaled down on screen, so the file still carries a 4000-pixel-wide photo to display something the size of a postcard.
PackFit opens that archive in your browser, recompresses the images it finds, and repacks it. The document keeps its structure, so what comes out is a valid file that opens normally — just without the hidden bulk.
